"Personal leadership is the ongoing process of keeping your vision and values before you and aligning your life to be congruent with those most important things.
~Stephen Covey
We are all familiar with the debate of whether "leaders are made, not born"
or "leaders are born, not made." What we do know is, great leadership, of any kind, begins with exceptional personal leadership.
Do you associate leadership with business, politics and authority figures? Or is it more personal than that? Is it in what we do on a daily basis to give our best and to help others do their best? Have you established your own sense of personal leadership in the quality of being able to lead others at home, at work, in business or in other areas of your life?
Personal Leadership is the ability to lead yourself from your current circumstances or situation to a better future. Personal Leadership as your foundation means taking charge of your own life or situation by making a specific plan to create change that is congruent with your goals and desires.
Leadership begins with and is built upon the structure and the integrity of your personal foundation. Typically, leadership is associated with what one does, rather than the far more important acknowledgment of the many core competencies required to be a leader. After all, how successful can one be in life and business if you are not solidly planted in the roots of your personal foundation? More importantly, as a leader, how sustainable will your success
in life or business be without exceptional skills that are completely aligned with your inner vision and values?
So, it seems that the leader can be made! What we are confident about is; great leaders exude character, integrity, self-confidence, charisma, trust, innovation, and competence. Great leaders are known both for extraordinary performances and their ability to continuously achieve extraordinary results. Yet, the chief distinguishing characteristic of the true great leader is the unspoken gift of courage. Courage is evident in great leaders when they foster an open-minded, inclusive and supportive environment that encourages individuals to voice their ideas, and take risks in their everyday efforts. Exceptional leadership is evident in leaders who teach, motivate, persuade
and inspire others to be empowered.
Good Leaders are Good Learners
In today's complex business environment, leaders are faced with different challenges that include more pressure and less resources. Today, more than ever, the focus is on what distinguishes managers from leaders and leaders from exceptional leaders. The expectations now are for leaders to play a greater role in the workplace than in the past. The workplace is no longer about simply producing the widget or making the sale. Today, the role of the leader is expansive. Leaders of today are held responsible for a myriad of responsibilities including employee engagement, customer satisfaction and retaining the best and brightest of their key talent.
Without the full compliment of leadership competencies, can the leader be
as effective? The debate exists, and yet, there are several key characteristics that are common in the greatest of leaders. Overall great leadership is what separates the achievers from the sustainers, regardless of the role one chooses in life. It's in their level of commitment and defined actions. It's in their unspoken determination of I CAN, I WILL, regardless of the constant pressures and ongoing changes that are common in business and life today. Great leaders, whether born or made, typically have exceptional communication skills, adjusting their leadership style to accommodate and engage who they interact with. Most important in their role of leader is the ability to remain determined while inspiring others to assume more responsibility for leading themselves.
The demand for exceptional leadership has never been greater, leadership
is no longer reserved for the corporate boardroom. In the ever-changing business world of today, leaders, at every level, are faced with tackling organizational challenges of unexpected shifts that occur with the rise in mergers and acquisitions, overnight changes in corporate management structures and organizational culture.
How does one prepare themselves for such change? What skills will you need to be successful in these unpredictable times? Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "The key to every man is his thought. He can only be reformed by showing him a new idea which commands his own." I utilize the knowledge attained in my career as an effective middle manager in a corporate environment, managing several small businesses, as well as my own, and compliment that with my formal training as a Professional Coach. I partner with you, support and inspire you to take what you already know, and propel that knowledge to a level of greatness which prepares you to successfully face today's challenges.
